Eixample is one of the most iconic neighbourhoods in Barcelona. The word Eixample is Catalan for extension or expansion and it was originally designed by the Catalan engineer Ildefons Cerdà in the 1850s as an extension to the old city. Cerdà was a huge fan of straight lines and a well-structured urban layout. His vision was to build an area that met the people’s need for leisure, space, health and social relationship. The main goal was to use the space in the best possible way and that is why he used a grid-like pattern to make sure no space is wasted.
Eixample tends to be dynamic and alive during the day and quieter at night compared to the other neighbourhoods like Poble Sec and Raval. The whole district is very multinational and multicultural, especially in recent years. The area is just a short walk away from the Old Town and the rest of Barcelona, all that while being in a neighbourhood thriving with activity and life. Last but not least, Eixample is home to two of Gaudi’s masterpieces: La Sagrada Familia and Casa Milà.
