About the area
Situated in the historic centre of Barcelona, the historic of the Gothic neighbourhood starts more than 2000 years ago, being steeped in history. The Sant Jaume square which represents now a political centre for the whole city was chosen by Romans as a settlement space in the province. At the moment, here you will find standing tall the City hall and the Palace of the Generalitat.
The whole area of Gothic is charged with history from various settlers. For example, the place has a lot of Jewish history. Throughout the narrow streets of Gothic, you will find many mystical spots. The Bishop’s Bridge for example, built in 1928 has a legend around it saying that anybody who crosses the bridge and sees the hidden skull will be put under a spell.
No need to worry however, since the House of Archdeacon or ‘’La Casa de l’Ardiaca’’ shelters a small mailbox which will instantly lift up the spell if you touch the turtle that decorates the mailbox. There is certainly a magic symmetry between the bridge and the mailbox.
Leaving the legends aside, the Gothic quarter is indisputably a work of art in terms of architecture, restaurants, sights and stores of all kinds. As borders, Gothic has Plaza Catalunya at its north and the sea in the south.
