Situated in the south of La Rambla, Barcelona’s most famous street, the name of the area comes from Arabic and means ‘’suburb’’. The name derives from the fact that during the Middle Ages, when the city’s walls were standing tall, El Raval was located outside of them.
That is why its most famous market, Bouqueria is at the border between Rambla and Raval, as this enabled traders to avoid paying the tax on merchandise. Nowadays, Raval shelters many beautiful spots such as Palau Guell, designed by Gaudi for his patron, Eusebi Guell.
Another site not to be missed is the Sant Pau del Camp Monastery, decorated with Moorish arches and Romanesque style. There are plenty of restaurants and bars where you can eat in El Raval and the food is for all tastes, from tapas to kebab and Asian. There is even a Michelin-starred Asian Restaurant here and Bar Marsella is rumoured to have had as customers Picasso and Hemingway.
