Story time: La nostra arribada a Barcelona
I remembered feeling a little overwhelmed by all the lives and the exciting new things that I had to discover. But I was really impatient to discover it all.
I suppose knowing some locals or, like me, having some friends who have been living in Barcelona for a while is the best way to know the city. My friend told me about the culture of the city and gave me some nice tips about bars and restaurants. We walked around the narrow streets and ended up seeing a wonderful carnival with some dragons costume spitting fireworks.
Fun fact, if you see people going under the fireworks, you might think that they are crazy or reckless, when in fact it’s a tradition. It is known as a luck and fortune provider. But no worries, the ambulance will always be around for those who get too close to the fireworks.
Her father emigrated from Castilla la Mancha to Catalonia when he was 11 years old, and grew up in Barcelona, such as a lot of people did after the Spanish Civil War. But he moved to Sabadell when he met her mother. Since that day, she has always been in Barcelona for special occasions. But she started discovering the city by herself around 15 years old thanks to school field trips. They cam to study the history of the city and why it is one of the most important places in the country and in Europe. They spent days in the city center, mostly in the Gothic Quarter. There, you can see at first sight the different phases that Barcelona has been through as time has passed. You can be walking around the Gothic cathedral, and 100 meters away see an old Roman cemetery and a Romanic church in the same road. She explained that she could spend hours getting lost with no fear in Ciutat Vella without any map or indication, finding small shops, restaurants or bars in narrow streets that you can’t find in any other place of Barcelona. She depicts Barcelona as an amazing city with a huge variety of things to do, with neighborhoods for all the tastes and everything that defines capital, but has a particular vibe and soul that will make you love it.
